Where the Illinois freight is
- Chicago. The region's planning agency, CMAP, has told Congress that about a quarter of the nation's freight rail traffic and nearly half of all intermodal trains pass through the Chicago region. Freight comes off the rail and goes out by truck.
- Joliet and Elwood. Will County is home to CenterPoint Intermodal Center, which the Joliet Arsenal Development Authority calls the largest master-planned inland port in North America, with big retail warehouses around it.
- The rest of the state. Food processing, manufacturing and farm freight out of Rockford, Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign and the river towns.
Reloads and deadhead in Illinois
Chicago has the freight, so the risk isn't sitting empty. It's booking a cheap load out because it's the easy one, or losing two hours to traffic getting to a pickup on the wrong side of the city. Count the miles and the time to the pickup, not just the rate.
Downstate is different. Deliver into a small town in central or southern Illinois and the nearest good reload can be a long drive away. We look at where a load leaves you before we book it.
Illinois seasons
- Winter. Snow and ice on I-80, I-55 and I-57 slow everything down. Build time into appointments and don't book tight back to back loads in a storm week.
- Protect from freeze, roughly October to March. Shippers of drinks, chemicals and other freight that can't freeze want reefers or heated trailers. Reefer owners get more options in the cold months.
- Retail peak. Warehouses around Chicago and Joliet push freight out ahead of the holidays.
Illinois costs and rules to know
- Tollway rates by the clock. The Illinois Tollway charges trucks more from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. than overnight, and I-PASS or E-ZPass gets the lowest rate. Plan pickups and through trips with that in mind, and put your tolls into the cost per mile calculator.
- Diesel. EIA's Midwest average was $6.26 a gallon for the week of October 12, 2026, a bit above the $6.18 US average.
- Chicago traffic. A pickup on the far side of the metro can eat hours. Appointment windows need to account for it.
- Rail yard freight. Loads tied to intermodal ramps can come with tight appointment and detention terms. We read them on the rate con before you roll.
How TenFour dispatches Illinois trucks
Every truck gets its own dispatcher who knows your lanes, your minimum and your home time. We book at or above your minimum, judge every load on rate per total mile with deadhead included, read every rate con before you roll, and log your in and out times so detention gets claimed. Brokers pay you directly, and we never touch your freight money.
Questions
Is Chicago a good place to reload?
Usually. The Chicago area has a deep pool of outbound freight from warehouses, rail yards and manufacturers. The work is finding the load that pays on total miles, since you're competing with a lot of trucks for the good ones.
How do Illinois Tollway truck tolls work?
The Illinois Tollway charges trucks a daytime rate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and a lower overnight rate from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. I-PASS and E-ZPass get the lowest price. Check the Tollway's current truck rate sheet for the plazas on your route.
Why do reefers haul dry freight in the winter?
Some dry freight, like drinks, paint and chemicals, can't freeze. Shippers mark it protect from freeze, and DAT notes the cold season usually runs October to March, with the coldest weather in the upper Midwest and Northeast. A reefer can hold it above freezing.
Is Chicago a good place to take a reefer load into?
In the winter it often is. DAT has listed Chicago among the top destinations for spot reefer loads in the winter months.
Want a dispatcher who works for your margin?
Every truck gets its own dispatcher. We judge every load on rate per total mile, deadhead included, and never book under your minimum. Brokers pay you directly.
