Where the Pennsylvania freight is
- The I-78 and I-81 corridors. Berks County's planning office describes them as recognized logistics corridors running from Northeastern Pennsylvania through the Lehigh Valley into Central Pennsylvania. Allentown, Bethlehem, Reading, Harrisburg, Carlisle and York are full of distribution centers.
- Philadelphia and the Delaware River ports. Import freight, food and refrigerated cargo.
- Pittsburgh and Western PA. Manufacturing, steel and energy freight.
- Central PA food. Food plants spread across the middle of the state ship by van and reefer.
Reloads and deadhead in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania warehouses ship to the whole Northeast, and a lot of those loads are short: New York, New Jersey, New England. Short loads add up to a lot of stops, tolls and traffic for the miles. And some delivery points, like parts of New England, are harder places to find a good load out.
We look at where a load leaves you before we book it, and judge every load on rate per total mile with deadhead included. A short load to New Jersey that leaves you stuck in traffic for a reload has to pay for that.
Pennsylvania seasons
- Winter. Storms bring PennDOT vehicle restrictions on I-80, I-81, I-78 and other interstates. Light and empty trucks are the first to get pulled off. Plan around the forecast, not the appointment.
- Winter reefer freight. South American produce through the Delaware River ports makes Philadelphia a busy reefer market in the cold months, according to DAT.
- Protect from freeze. Dry freight that can't freeze moves on reefers in the cold season.
- Retail peak. Lehigh Valley and I-81 warehouses ship heavy ahead of the holidays.
Pennsylvania costs and rules to know
- Turnpike tolls. The 2026 most common Class 5 toll is $24.12 with E-ZPass and $48.24 by plate, per the Turnpike. The Turnpike has also announced 3.5% increases for 2027. Price tolls into every load, and into the cost per mile calculator.
- PennDOT winter restrictions. Tiered bans by road and county, announced on 511PA. A restriction on your route can mean a day sitting.
- Diesel. EIA's Central Atlantic average, the region that includes Pennsylvania, was $6.47 a gallon for the week of October 12, 2026, above the $6.18 US average.
- Warehouse appointments. Big distribution centers run on tight appointments with late fees. We read those terms on the rate con before you roll.

Questions
What does the Pennsylvania Turnpike cost a tractor-trailer?
For 2026 the Turnpike says the most common Class 5 tractor-trailer toll is $24.12 with E-ZPass and $48.24 with Toll By Plate. Toll By Plate costs about twice as much, so run an E-ZPass.
Can PennDOT ban trucks during a snowstorm?
Yes. PennDOT uses tiered vehicle restrictions on interstates during winter storms. Lower tiers keep empty and light trucks off certain roads, higher tiers require chains or traction devices, and the top tier bars commercial vehicles. Check 511PA before you roll in bad weather.
Is there reefer freight out of Philadelphia in the winter?
Yes. DAT has called Philadelphia one of the largest reefer spot markets in its network during the winter, with refrigerated imports from South America coming in on the Delaware River.
Are you really in Pennsylvania?
Yes. TenFour Freight LLC is registered in Pennsylvania and based in Philadelphia. We dispatch trucks in all 48 states.
